Guiding Question: What does it look like to be found faithful at the return of the Lord?
1. Living in Light of the Lord’s Return Means Placing Our Confidence in Christ, Not in False Securities. (5:1-4)
Jesus will come like a thief in the night—we cannot predict the timing of His return. (5:2)
The fact of His coming should not surprise us. (5:4) The timing will. (5:2)
The world will be saying “peace and security” when sudden destruction comes. (5:3)
“Peace” (Pax Romana): False stability under Roman rule.
“Security” (Securitas): The empty promises of local Greek authorities.
Application: Identify false securities—Where are you placing your trust? What would you be most afraid to lose if your world collapsed?
2. Living in Light of the Lord’s Return Means Staying Awake and Sober—Clothing Ourselves with Hope. (5:5-9)
Paul contrasts “day people” and “night people.” Being awake means living in obedience, not complacency. (5:6)
Our confidence in Christ’s return strengthens and protects us. (5:8)
Application: Identify where you’ve lost hope—What situation makes you feel anxious or uncertain about the future?
3. Living in Light of the Lord’s Return Means Strengthening One Another in the Certainty of Our Salvation. (5:10-11)
Faith burns brightest in community; alone, we grow cold. (Hebrews 10:24-25)
Jesus calls us to be ready together—our confidence in His return should lead to encouragement, not fear.
Application: Identify someone to encourage this week. Who needs to be reminded of the hope we have?
Key Takeaway: Hope that won’t burn out comes from placing our confidence in Christ, staying spiritually awake, and strengthening one another as we wait for His return.
